Rough Edges
In some aspects, Abraham Lincoln was like the silk purse made from a sow's ear. His rough edges were the subject of scurrilous jokes that mocked his lowly beginnings, and poked fun of peculiarities - like his walk that made it appear he was stepping over rows of cotton. His scrawny neck, with an over-sized Adam's apple, that bobbed up and down when he spoke, drew more excitement at times than his eloquent speeches. Still others came to know a man who would do anything for friends, held few grudges, and used humor and good will, rather than rancor, to prod his generals and others into action. Finally, it was this man who, as President of the United States, guided this nation through the 'fiery trial" of a civil war that tested the character and the commitment of the American people to our founding principles. "Rough Edges" is a testament to this finest of men who not only transformed himself, but saw the "silk purse" in others." - John McClarey, sculptor
